Abstract

This dissertation explores a series of transformations in the articulations between politics and cultural production in Spain between 2000 and 2011. The four chapters seek to document and theorize the nature and effects of these changes across three primary spheres of action. Thus the first chapter analyzes State policies and institutional arrangements in relation to cultural production during the last decades of the Spanish democratic regime. Chapters Two and Three consist of close readings of two relevant texts from recent Spanish literary production that offer divergent literary representations of the political. The analysis of Javier Cercas' Anatomia de un instante (2008) tries to show how this text exemplifies a linkage between a state-centric, representative conception of politics, and the use traditional modes of literary representation. In contrast, Belen Gopegui's El padre de Blancanieves (2007) is studied as a narrative exploration of participatory and movement political forms. The fourth and last chapter comprises an historical study of a series of spaces, initiatives and practices of cultural production stemming from different activist groups and collectives active in Spain throughout the mid-nineties until the present, which point to alternative forms of articulation of the political and cultural production, mainly through social centers, publishing houses, militant research collectives and processes of self-education. Through the combined study of these three different planes of analysis, my dissertation attempts to provide some elements for a historical or genealogical framework of the current political and cultural situation in Spain, by studying its immediate past, through the problematization of the cultural regime stemming from the transitional period of the seventies, and the exploration of alternative historical temporalities such as those exemplified by the work and trajectory of social movements. These historical discussions are accompanied by a series of theoretical elaborations on issues such as the role of State institutions regarding specific artistic and cultural developments, the implicit redefinition of culture brought by different practices and contexts of production, and the role of ideology as a crucial instance within the articulation between political and cultural forms and practices. | 231 pages
