Abstract
The day before my 18th birthday, I opened the door to two cops who told me that my brother had been killed in a car accident in England. The news of his death launched me into a surreal period of numbness and denial, one marked by the kind of identity crisis that comes from losing the person who had, until then, been my guide. And Then it Hit Me: A Memoir navigates the years spent avoiding grief, ditching friends, hiding out in relationships all wrong for me, carrying on with men too old for me, and taking a job with a con man magazine publisher who cut me off from reality, until, finally, I realized that in order to find peace and live my own life, I'd have to face up to and accept all that I had lost. | 285 pages
