About This Journal

Stony Brook Orthopaedic Journal Introduction

Welcome to the Stony Brook Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Journal, the new name and new home of what was formerly the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Annual Research & Patient Safety/Quality Improvement Journal. Now published open access through Stony Brook University’s Academic Commons, the journal builds on over two decades of annual research publications and brings our department’s scholarship to a much wider audience.

Research is central to who we are as a department. Many of the manuscripts here represents the work of our residents and fellows, guided by faculty mentors and investigators who help them frame a clinical question, design a sound study, analyze the results, and carry the project through to publication. That partnership teaches our trainees to think critically, understand statistics and hypotheses, to read the literature with a discerning eye, and to let evidence shape the care they give. These habits stay with them for the rest of their careers. The journal also welcomes submissions from alumni and other musculoskeletal researchers from other institutions.

The journal’s scope spans basic science, preclinical, and clinical studies of the musculoskeletal system, and our commitment to patient safety and quality improvement remains at its core. Each project is intended to reduce complications, improve outcomes, and answer the scientific questions that matter most to our patients.

I am proud of our graduating residents and fellows, and grateful to the faculty mentors and researchers who invest so much of their time and energy in these projects. All of them stand to represent Stony Brook and our readership well in the years ahead.

Sincerely,
Jim Penna, MD
Clinical Professor and Chair
