Abstract

" Soldier On" is a feature-length screenplay about a teenage boy named Kyle, a high school quarterback struggling with his sexuality. Not too long after moving to a new high school in the small town of Burden, Florida, Kyle quickly becomes involved with a gay student, Scott and the high school rebel, Mara. The conflict between these two friendships reflects Kyle's inner turmoil. The heterosexual lie he lives versus the homosexual life he hides. It is through the friction of his relationships and the consequences of his actions that Kyle is forced to make the decision that will change the rest of his life. My research for this screenplay included the reading of screenplays with similar themes and conflicts and the interviewing of gay family members and friends who have had to deal with their own struggles with sexuality. These first hand accounts went a long way in grounding my story and characters and providing me with the background I needed to execute this script. Reading the screenplays of films, such as " Boys Don't Cry," helped in crafting and navigating the many conflicts and resolutions throughout my story. It was the combination of real-life experience and the analysis of craft that helped pull this screenplay together. | 111 pages
